Flagpoles that deserve a flag

Bull and bear flags fail in training rooms for a simple reason: participants draw the consolidation first and invent the pole afterward.

What we require of a pole

A usable pole is a near-vertical impulse with little overlap, lasting few bars relative to the prior range, and leaving a clear starting point for measuring height. Overlapping bars dressed as a “pole” become a channel study instead — a different lesson.

Consolidation quality

Once the pole is accepted, the flag should slope gently against the impulse or move sideways with declining participation. Steep counter-trend drifts that retrace most of the pole are reclassified; we do not force the flag label to save the story.

Measured targets with humility

Pole height projected from the break of the flag gives a reference, not a promise. In workshops we practice exiting logic when price stalls at half the projection with heavy opposing volume — a discussion that belongs next to the geometry, not in a separate “mindset” lecture.
